She Made Him See Color

I wrote this month's ago when I didn't have any writers block.  I write quite a bit,  but I am just now comfortable letting other people read this.  It's not perfect,  and it's a bit of a work of fiction,  but I've always loved to write.  I hope all of you enjoy this.

               She Made Him See Color

It was a beautiful August day, the sun was shining, the heat wasn't too bad, the Virginia humidity was low, large cummulus clouds were scattered across the blue sky, and a slight breeze kept it all together.  Cameron and Melissa were spending the day together at a popular amusement park. It was the first time they were able to spend an entire day together, and their avidity was shown through the joy that was found in their eyes and on their smiles.

Cameron was in astonishment of Melissa and her almost child like excitement of the two of them not only being where they were, but to be there together. Melissa felt as if nobody could make her day any better than Cameron could. She wanted to be near him, he wanted to be next to her, and they both wanted to create memories together that they would laugh  and talk about for years to come to friends, family, and between each other.

Melissa was excited like a small child on Christmas morning rushing down the stairs to see if Santa visited her. She would watch Cameron behind her pink sunglasses whenever he wasn't paying attention to what she was doing with a curious feeling of wonderment. She was elated at the fact she was with the man she adored. Cameron smiled softly at every moment he was watching Melissa, and loved to watch her just go through her day. They both felt so incredibly lucky that they found each other, and that they were in this world together.

They looked past all of their flaws as if they didn't exist. Melissa felt she wasn't attractive because of her rough and troubled past, and Cameron felt inadequate partially because he was colorblind. Now he was not completely colorblind, he could see color, but he just couldn't always tell you what the colors were. After years of ridicule the subject broke him down making Cameron think that he wasn't smart. They embraced each other for who they were, and thought of each other as the most astonishing people that walked into each others lives.

The two of them went about their day with pure delight. Nothing seemed to matter to them. The wait of the lines was more time to spend looking into each others eyes. Going to the shops to look at absurdly priced items was more time to laugh and joke about things. Life in that moment was what life should be for them. The bond they created, and cherished was one that even the strongest of fictional super villians or monsters could not surmount.

As the day was winding down Cameron and Melissa went onto a three dimensional ride. Cameron was so adamant about not wearing the special glasses because he was colorblind. Cameron softly said "There's no point. They do not work for me." To which Melissa softly looked and retorted "Just take them." Cameron did oblige, and took the glasses. As they took their seats in the ride and everyone, but Cameron put the glasses on Melissa took notice of this. She didn't say anything at the start, but eventually she asked him to put them on. Cameron again said "They do not work for me." But again, Cameron reluctantly put them on. His world changed before he even knew it. Cameron for the first time in his almost 30 years on this Earth saw things in a manner that he did not know existed. Cameron had things jumping into his face with a sense of being so close that they could almost touch him. His jaw dropped, and his eyes widened. He went through the rest of the ride with Melissa with wonderment. At the end of the ride as everyone exited Cameron took a hold of Melissa's hand, and spun her around. He looked at her for a brief moment before exclaiming "Things like this exist? This is real? This is something that happens?" He didn't know how to express what he had just seen, and he didn't understand how it all worked for him. Melissa softly smiled at him, and was elated at the fact she experienced something so brand new to Cameron. She loved to see him be excited about life, and new experiences. Cameron for the first time in his life felt normal when it came to something about his slight disability.

After the ride Cameron and Melissa walked hand in hand together through the park debating on whether or not to ride one more ride, or to go home. Well, Melissa was debating, Cameron was still babbling on about how amazing that ride was like he was a child who found a toy at a toy store that he must have. But, then, a loud boom was heard, the sky lit up, and they realized that there was a fireworks show that night. They both stopped to watch the show that they did not know was going to happen.

Melissa stood with Cameron holding onto him with both of her arms wrapped around his one, and her head resting on his shoulder as they watched the fireworks show before the park closed. Out of their silence Melissa began to tell Cameron the colors of the explosions that were happening before their eyes. As Melissa did this Cameron felt like he wasn't colorblind anymore. The moment she told him what color he should be seeing it became clear to him. Reds turned into red, greens into green, and blues into blue. It was as if Melissa could control the colors that Cameron was seeing with her calming voice. She made Cameron feel appreciated, and that he was right where he needed to be.

In that moment Cameron realized that he was in the closest definition of perfection that anyone could ever describe. Cameron was standing there with the most beautiful woman inside and out that he has ever known or seen. The world faded away, and it was just Melissa and Cameron spending their time together. Cameron didn't want her to leave his side, he didn't want to move, he didn't want to be anywhere except for with Melissa.

It was all about experiencing a day with her, experiencing life, and creating memories that would forever be branded onto his mind and in his heart. Cameron didn't need to show her off, nor was he completely compelled to do so. Cameron and Melissa being together wasn't a competition, it wasn't a pageant, and Melissa wasn't a trophy to Cameron. Melissa wasn't some inanimate object that was only dusted off to show your buddies of previous accomplishments. She was the person that Cameron meant to be with right then and there. She was his date, the object of his eye, and who Cameron wanted to give all of his time to in that moment. But Melissa, did something that Cameron could never repay, or ever get from anyone else. Melissa gave Cameron the gift of color. A gift that he has never experienced before.  Melissa's compassion for Cameron and making him feel appreciated for everything that he did for her was immeasurable, and incomparable. Melissa and Cameron were one, but at the same time they were their own entities.
